Words to Algebra: Year 1 Expressions
Translating everyday language into mathematical expressions Building the foundation for algebraic thinking Year 1 Mathematics - New Zealand Curriculum
What Are Expressions?
Mathematical expressions use numbers and symbols They help us write about real situations Like saying 'three apples plus two apples' as 3 + 2 Expressions tell mathematical stories
Word to Number Practice
Listen to the words Draw the picture Write the numbers Share your answer
From Words to Addition
'More', 'plus', 'altogether' mean addition (+) Example: 'I have 4 stickers and get 3 more' This becomes: 4 + 3 The answer tells us the total
From Words to Subtraction
'Take away', 'less', 'remove' mean subtraction (-) Example: 'I had 7 balloons but 2 popped' This becomes: 7 - 2 The answer tells us what's left
Word Clues for Operations
{"left":"Addition Words: more, plus, altogether, total, add","right":"Subtraction Words: take away, less, remove, left, minus"}
Story Problem Workshop
Read the story together Find the important numbers Look for operation clues Write the expression
