Algebra Symbols: Add, Subtract, Equals
Year 7-8 Mathematics Understanding +, -, and = symbols Lesson 1 of 4: Mastering Algebra Basics
WALT - We Are Learning To
Understand the use of symbols +, -, and = in algebraic expressions Explore how these symbols represent mathematical operations and equality Create and solve simple algebraic statements using these symbols
Success Criteria
I can identify the symbols +, -, and = in algebraic contexts I can explain what each symbol means and how it operates I can create simple algebraic statements using these symbols I can solve basic equations with these symbols
Symbol Detective
Look around the classroom Find examples of +, -, and = symbols Think about what they mean in everyday life Share your discoveries with a partner
The Addition Symbol: +
Means 'add' or 'plus' Combines two or more numbers Example: 3 + 5 = 8 In algebra: x + 4 means 'x plus 4'
The Subtraction Symbol: -
Means 'subtract' or 'take away' Removes one number from another Example: 8 - 3 = 5 In algebra: y - 2 means 'y minus 2'
The Equals Symbol: =
Means 'is the same as' or 'equals' Shows that both sides have the same value Example: 4 + 1 = 5 In algebra: x + 3 = 7 means both sides are equal
Let's Practice Together!
Look at this equation: 3 + b = 7 What does each symbol mean? What number could b be? How do you know?
