Whole Number Structure: Year 5 Review
Preparing for our assessment Reviewing key concepts Building confidence with numbers
WALT: Review Whole Number Structure
We Are Learning To review place value up to 1,000,000 We Are Learning To practice rounding to different place values We Are Learning To work with negative integers We Are Learning To find factor pairs up to 12 times tables
Success Criteria
I can read and write numbers up to 1,000,000 I can identify the value of digits in different positions I can round numbers to the nearest 100,000, 10,000, 1,000, 100, or 10 I can count forwards and backwards through zero I can find all factor pairs for numbers up to 144
Place Value: Year 4 vs Year 5
{"left":"Year 4: Numbers to 10,000\nYear 5: Numbers to 1,000,000\nExample: 9,306 - the 3 represents 300","right":"Example: 204,067 - the 4 represents 40,000\nFocus on thousands place\nFocus on ten thousands and hundred thousands places"}
Place Value Challenge
Write the number: Two hundred and four thousand, sixty-seven What is the value of the 6 in 567,892? Which digit is in the ten thousands place in 345,678? Extension: Create your own 6-digit number and challenge a partner
Reading Large Numbers
Break numbers into groups of three from right to left Say each group with its place value name Example: 567,892 = five hundred and sixty-seven thousand, eight hundred and ninety-two Practice with: 234,567 and 789,123
Rounding Rules Reminder
Rounding Practice
Round 67,845 to the nearest 10,000 Round 156,789 to the nearest 1,000 Round 89,456 to the nearest 100 Extension: Round 345,678 to three different place values
Negative Integers
Numbers less than zero Count backwards through zero: 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2, -3 Year 5 focus: counting in patterns through zero Example: -2, -4, -6, -8, -10 (counting in 2s backwards)
Think About It
If the temperature is 3°C and it drops by 5 degrees, what will the temperature be? What comes next in this pattern: 4, 2, 0, -2, ___? Which is colder: -5°C or -2°C?
Factor Pairs: Year 5 Level
Find all the ways to multiply two numbers to get your target Year 5 focus: factor pairs up to 12 times tables Example: 24 = 1×24, 2×12, 3×8, 4×6 Remember: factors come in pairs!
Factor Pair Hunt
Find all factor pairs for 36 Find all factor pairs for 48 Challenge: Which number between 20-30 has the most factor pairs? Extension: Investigate perfect squares - what's special about their factor pairs?
