Round Up or Down in Nature!
A Mathematical Adventure Year 3 Mathematics Learning Rounding Rules
What is Rounding?
Making numbers simpler Finding the nearest 10 Like finding the closest tree in a forest Helps us estimate and count quickly
The Rounding Mountain
Numbers live on a special mountain The mountain has two sides One side goes UP One side goes DOWN
The Rounding Rule Forest
Animal Number Sorting
Look at the ones digit If it's 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 - the animal goes DOWN the hill If it's 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 - the animal climbs UP the mountain Let's practice with forest friends!
Rounding to the Nearest 10
Look at the ones digit only Example: 23 → look at the 3 3 is 0-4, so round DOWN 23 becomes 20
Another Example: 47
Look at the ones digit: 7 7 is in the 5-9 family So we round UP 47 becomes 50
Nature Quiz Time!
Where does 34 go? UP the mountain or DOWN the hill? Look at the ones digit! Discuss with your nature buddy!
Practice with Nature Numbers
{"left":"56 → Look at 6 → Round UP → 60\n31 → Look at 1 → Round DOWN → 30","right":"78 → Look at 8 → Round UP → 80\n42 → Look at 2 → Round DOWN → 40"}
Remember the Nature Rule!
0, 1, 2, 3, 4 → Go DOWN the hill 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 → Climb UP the mountain
