Church Power in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages (500-1500 CE), the Catholic Church was the most powerful organization in Europe. The Pope was the leader of the Church and claimed to have power over all kings and rulers. The Church controlled large amounts of land and collected taxes called tithes from the people.

The Church demanded absolute obedience from everyone. People believed they needed the Church to go to heaven. If someone disobeyed the Church, they could be excommunicated (kicked out) and denied salvation. Kings who challenged the Pope could have their entire kingdoms placed under interdict, meaning no Church services could be held.

The Church also controlled education and most books. Only priests could read and write, giving them great power over information. People had to follow Church rules in their daily lives, including what they could eat, when they could work, and how they should behave.
