What is a Theme?
A theme is the BIG IDEA or lesson in a story It's what the author wants us to learn Examples: friendship, courage, honesty, perseverance Themes are found through character actions and story events We use evidence from the text to identify themes

Finding Evidence in Text
Evidence = proof from the story Look for character actions and dialogue Pay attention to story events and outcomes Notice how characters change or learn Highlight or underline important sentences Ask: 'What does this show me about the theme?'

Text Evidence Hunt
Read the passage silently (5 minutes) Think-Pair-Share: • What is happening in the story? • What theme do you see? • Highlight 2-3 sentences that support your thinking Fill in your Text Evidence Graphic Organizer

Discussion Questions
What is the theme of our passage? Which words or actions reveal this theme? How does the story end, and how does that support the theme? What evidence from the text supports your thinking?

Writing Your Opinion Paragraph
Task: Write about whether the theme helps us learn something important Start with a clear opinion statement Give at least two reasons with text evidence Use transition words: 'For example,' 'Because,' 'This shows' End with a strong conclusion Remember to check grammar and spelling!
