States of Matter: Solids, Liquids, Gases
Grade 3 Science Understanding the world around us

What is Matter?
Matter is everything around us It takes up space It has weight We can see and touch most matter

Look Around Activity
Find 3 things in our classroom Touch them gently Describe how they feel Are they hard, soft, or something else?

Solids
Keep their shape Feel hard or firm Don't change shape easily Examples: rocks, books, ice
Liquids
Take the shape of their container Flow and pour Feel wet Examples: water, juice, milk

Gases
Fill up all available space We usually can't see them Move freely in the air Examples: air we breathe, steam, balloon air

Think and Share
What happens to water when it gets very cold? What happens to water when it gets very hot? Can matter change from one state to another?

Review: Three States of Matter
Solids keep their shape Liquids take the shape of containers Gases fill all available space All matter is affected by gravity
