Romans 2: God's Righteous Judgment
An exploration of Paul's teaching on divine justice Understanding God's impartial judgment Grade 12 Religious Studies

Context: Paul's Letter to Rome
Written around 57 AD to the Roman church Paul had not yet visited Rome personally Addresses both Jewish and Gentile believers Follows the theme of righteousness from chapter 1

Key Verse
"You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things." - Romans 2:1

The Problem of Hypocrisy (Romans 2:1-4)
Judging others while doing the same things God's judgment is based on truth, not appearances God's kindness leads to repentance Storing up wrath through stubbornness

God's Judgment vs. Human Judgment
{"left":"Based on truth and complete knowledge\nImpartial and fair\nConsiders the heart and motives\nPerfect timing","right":"Based on limited information\nOften biased and prejudiced\nFocuses on external appearances\nHasty and imperfect"}

Self-Reflection Exercise
Think of a time when you judged someone harshly Consider: Were you guilty of similar behavior? How might God view that situation? Write down one insight about judgment

God's Righteous Judgment (Romans 2:5-11)
God will repay each person according to their deeds Glory and honor for those who do good Wrath and anger for those who do evil No favoritism with God
Discussion Question
How does knowing that God shows no favoritism change how we should treat others? What does this mean for social justice and equality?

The Law and the Gentiles (Romans 2:12-16)
Those without the law will be judged without the law Those under the law will be judged by the law Gentiles can follow the law naturally through conscience The law is written on their hearts

The Role of Conscience

True Circumcision (Romans 2:17-29)
Jews relied on their special status and the law But they often failed to keep the law they taught True circumcision is of the heart, not flesh It's about spiritual transformation, not ritual

The Heart of the Matter
"No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person's praise is not from other people, but from God." - Romans 2:29
