Discovering the Building Blocks of Stories
Understanding Character, Setting, Problem, and Resolution Grade 5 English Language Arts

What Are Story Elements?
Story elements are the basic parts that make up every story Like ingredients in a recipe, each element has an important job Understanding these parts helps us become better readers and writers Today we'll explore the four main story elements

Characters: The People in Our Stories
Characters are the people, animals, or creatures in a story Main character = protagonist (the hero of the story) Other characters help or challenge the main character Characters have personalities, feelings, and goals

Setting: Where and When Stories Happen
Setting is the time and place where a story happens Can be real places or imaginary worlds Includes both location (where) and time period (when) Setting affects how characters act and what problems they face

Problem: The Challenge Characters Must Face
Every good story has a problem or conflict The problem creates excitement and keeps us reading Characters must work to solve their problem Problems can be big or small, serious or funny

Resolution: How Problems Get Solved
Resolution is how the problem gets solved or worked out Shows what the character learned or how they changed Not all problems are solved perfectly Good resolutions feel satisfying to readers

Why Story Elements Matter
Understanding story elements helps us appreciate the craft of storytelling and become better readers and writers ourselves.
