Classifying Chemical Reactions by Type
Grade 10 Physical Science Understanding the 5 Main Reaction Types

Learning Objectives - I Can Statements
I can identify and classify different types of chemical reactions I can analyze chemical equations to determine the reaction type I can communicate my understanding using correct scientific terminology I can classify at least 4 out of 5 sample reactions correctly

The Five Types of Chemical Reactions

Synthesis Reactions - Building Up
Two or more simple substances combine to form a more complex compound General formula: A + B → AB Example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O Also called combination reactions

Decomposition Reactions - Breaking Down
A complex compound breaks down into simpler substances General formula: AB → A + B Example: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂ (electrolysis) Opposite of synthesis reactions

Single vs Double Replacement Reactions
{"left":"Single Replacement: One element replaces another in a compound\nFormula: A + BC → AC + B\nExample: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu","right":"Double Replacement: Two compounds exchange ions\nFormula: AB + CD → AD + CB\nExample: AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO₃"}

Classification Practice Activity
Work in pairs to classify these reactions: Mg + O₂ → MgO CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu Discuss your reasoning with your partner

Quick Check - Can You Classify This?
Look at this reaction: 2NaOH + H₂SO₄ → Na₂SO₄ + 2H₂O What type of reaction is this? Explain your reasoning to a classmate
