Sorting 3D Shapes by Properties
Year 1 Maths Learning about faces, edges and vertices

What are 3D Shapes?
Shapes that are not flat They have height, width and depth We can pick them up and hold them They are all around us!

Shape Properties - What to Look For
Faces - the flat surfaces Edges - where two faces meet Vertices - the pointy corners These help us sort shapes!
Common 3D Shapes
{"left":"Cube - 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices\nSphere - 1 curved face, no edges, no vertices","right":"Cylinder - 3 faces, 2 edges, no vertices\nCone - 2 faces, 1 edge, 1 vertex"}

Shape Sorting Challenge
Look at each shape Count the faces, edges, vertices Put shapes with the same properties together Work with your partner!

Quick Check
Which shape has no vertices? Which shape has 8 vertices? Which shapes roll? Which shapes stack?

What We Learned Today
3D shapes have special properties Faces are flat surfaces Edges are where faces meet Vertices are pointy corners We can sort shapes by counting these!

Shape Hunt Homework
Find 3D shapes at home Draw or take photos Count faces, edges, vertices Bring your findings to share!
