Exploring Habitats and Their Resources
Year 7 Science Understanding how organisms survive in different environments Lesson 2: Environment and Adaptation Unit

What is a Habitat?
Think about where you live... What do you need to survive there? How is this similar to where animals live?

Habitat Definition
A habitat is the natural environment where an organism lives It provides everything needed for survival: • Food and water • Shelter and protection • Space to live and reproduce • Suitable climate conditions

World Habitats Map

Habitat Types and Their Key Features
{"left":"Tropical Rainforest: Hot, wet, dense trees, high biodiversity\nDesert: Hot/cold, very dry, sparse vegetation, extreme temperatures\nOcean: Saltwater, different depths, coral reefs, marine life","right":"Grassland: Open plains, seasonal rainfall, grazing animals\nTundra: Very cold, frozen ground, short growing season\nWetlands: Shallow water, rich soil, migratory bird stopover"}

Digital Habitat Scavenger Hunt
Work in pairs or small groups Research your assigned habitat using tablets/computers Find and record: • 2 interesting facts about resources • 2 examples of organisms that live there • 1 surprising discovery to share with class

Essential Habitat Resources
All habitats must provide four key resources: 🍎 FOOD - Plants, animals, nutrients for energy 💧 WATER - Fresh or salt water for drinking and body functions 🏠 SHELTER - Protection from weather and predators 📏 SPACE - Room to move, hunt, nest, and reproduce
