Estimating Numbers: Year 1 Number Lines
WALT: Estimate numbers within ranges on number lines (10-50) Making clever guesses about how many! Year 1 Maths
What is Estimation?
A clever guess about how many things there are We don't count each one - we look and guess! Then we check by counting to see how close we were It helps us work with numbers quickly
Our Number Line Ranges
10 to 20: Our first range 20 to 30: Getting bigger! 30 to 40: Even more! 40 to 50: The biggest range today!
Let's Practice Together!
Look at this group of cubes Which range do you think it's in? 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, or 40-50? What's your estimate?
Success Criteria - What We Want to Achieve
I can make a sensible guess within a number range I can explain if my guess is too high or too low I can check my estimate by counting I can compare estimates and say which is closer
Estimation Station Challenge
Visit each estimation jar around the room Start with the 10-20 jar Write your estimate on your whiteboard Count to check - were you close?
Think and Share
Which jar was easiest to estimate? Why? Which jar was trickiest? Why? What helped you make good estimates? Did anyone's estimate surprise them?
Estimation Strategies We Discovered
{"left":"Look for groups of 10\nCompare to numbers I know well\nThink about halfway points","right":"Use the number line ranges\nLook at how much space the objects take up\nCompare to previous jars"}
Quick Fire Challenge!
I'll show you some objects for just 5 seconds Write your estimate on your whiteboard Which range is it in? Let's count together to check!
Well Done, Mathematicians!
You made clever estimates today! You learned to use number line ranges You checked your guesses by counting You can explain your mathematical thinking! Ready for more estimation adventures!
