Beaches and Sandbanks: How Coasts Grow
Understanding Coastal Deposition Year 3 & 4 Geography

What do you see at the beach?
Sand Shells Pebbles Rocks

What is Coastal Deposition?
The sea carries things It drops them on the shore This makes beaches bigger Sand and pebbles build up

Let's Act Like Waves!
Pick up pretend sand Carry it across the room Drop it in a pile Watch our 'beach' grow!

How Beaches are Made
Waves bring sand from the sea Wind blows sand around Sand piles up over time This makes a beach!

From Sea to Shore: Beach Building Process
Types of Beaches
{"left":"Sandy Beaches:\n• Made of tiny grains\n• Soft to walk on\n• Good for building castles","right":"Pebble Beaches:\n• Made of small stones\n• Harder to walk on\n• Stones are smooth"}

What are Sandbanks?
Hills of sand in shallow water Made by waves and currents Sometimes you can walk on them They can move and change

Build a Sandbank
Use play sand or rice Pour it in a water tray Make a hill underwater Watch how it looks like our pictures!

Where does the sand come from?
From cliffs being worn away From rivers bringing it to the sea From shells and rocks breaking up The sea collects it all!

Coasts are Always Changing
Beaches grow bigger and smaller Sandbanks move around Storms can change them quickly This happens very slowly most of the time
Remember
The sea is like a builder - it carries materials and builds new land along our coasts!
