🔤 Basic Translation Terms

TRANSLATION

A transformation that moves a shape from one position to another without rotating, flipping, or changing its size. The shape "slides" to a new location on the grid.

VECTOR

A mathematical way to describe the direction and distance of a translation. It tells us exactly how far and which way to move a shape.

SLIDE

Another word for translation. When we slide a shape, we move it in a straight line without turning or flipping it.

DIRECTION

The way a shape moves during a translation. Common directions include up, down, left, right, or combinations like "3 units right and 2 units up."

📏 Movement and Measurement

DISTANCE

How far a shape moves during a translation. We measure this by counting grid squares or units on the coordinate plane.

HORIZONTAL MOVEMENT

Movement from left to right (or right to left) across the grid. This changes the x-coordinate but keeps the y-coordinate the same.

VERTICAL MOVEMENT

Movement up or down on the grid. This changes the y-coordinate but keeps the x-coordinate the same.

NEGATIVE VECTOR

A vector that describes movement in the opposite direction - left instead of right, or down instead of up. Uses negative numbers to show direction.

📊 Grid and Coordinate Terms

COORDINATE GRID

A grid made up of horizontal and vertical lines that helps us locate and move shapes precisely. Each point has an x and y coordinate.

ORIGIN

The starting point on a coordinate grid where the x-axis and y-axis meet. It has the coordinates (0, 0).

COORDINATE NOTATION

A way of writing the exact position of a point using numbers in brackets, like (3, 5). The first number is the x-coordinate, the second is the y-coordinate.
