Speak Up: Reporting Abuse Safely
Keeping Ourselves Safe Year 6 Health Education Learning to protect ourselves and others
What is Abuse?
When someone hurts another person on purpose Can be physical, emotional, or involve inappropriate touching It's never the victim's fault Adults should protect children, not harm them
Who Can You Trust?
Think about the adults in your life Who makes you feel safe and listened to? Who would you feel comfortable talking to about a problem?
Warning Signs to Watch For
Someone asks you to keep secrets about touching An adult makes you feel uncomfortable or scared Someone threatens you or people you care about Your instincts tell you something isn't right
Safe or Unsafe? Decision Game
Listen to each scenario Decide if it's safe or unsafe Explain your reasoning Remember: trust your feelings!
How to Report Safely
Tell a trusted adult immediately If the first person doesn't believe you, tell someone else You can call Oranga Tamariki (0508 326 459) Keep telling until someone helps you
What TO Do vs What NOT to Do
{"left":"Tell a trusted adult right away\nKeep telling until someone believes you\nRemember it's not your fault\nCall for help if needed","right":"Don't keep dangerous secrets\nDon't blame yourself\nDon't try to handle it alone\nDon't be afraid to speak up"}
Remember This Important Message
'It takes courage to speak up, but your safety and the safety of others is worth it. You are brave, you are believed, and you deserve to be protected.'
