Network Protocols: Sharing Digitally and Ethically
Year 9 Digital Technology Understanding how computers communicate Sharing responsibly in our digital world
WALT & Success Criteria
We Are Learning To: Understand what network protocols are and how they enable communication Recognise the importance of sharing digital content ethically and legally Respect privacy and local cultural considerations in digital communication Success: I can explain protocols, identify ethical considerations, and suggest responsible sharing methods
What Are Network Protocols?
Protocols are the 'rules' that devices follow to communicate safely Like a common language that all computers understand Examples: HTTP/HTTPS (websites), FTP (file transfer), TCP/IP (internet communication) Without protocols, devices couldn't 'talk' to each other properly
Common Network Protocols Explained
{"left":"HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol: How web browsers load websites and web pages\nHTTPS - Secure version of HTTP with encryption for safe online shopping and banking","right":"FTP - File Transfer Protocol: How large files are uploaded and downloaded between computers\nTCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol: The foundation that makes the internet work"}
Think & Discuss
How do protocols protect our information when we share content online? What might happen if there were no rules for digital communication? Why is it important to consider ethics when sharing digital content?
Group Research Activity
Form groups of 4-5 students Each group researches one protocol (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, TCP/IP) OR one ethical issue (privacy, copyright, cultural respect) Prepare 3 key points about your topic Use fact sheets and digital devices for research Present findings to the class in 2 minutes
Ethical & Legal Considerations
Privacy: Getting permission before sharing photos or personal information Copyright: Respecting creators' rights when sharing music, images, or videos Cultural Respect: Being mindful of cultural sensitivities in our diverse NZ society Legal Frameworks: Understanding NZ laws like the Privacy Act that protect digital rights
Scenario Sorting Challenge
Work in pairs with scenario cards Sort each scenario into categories: Ethical/Unethical, Legal/Illegal, Respectful/Disrespectful Example scenarios: Sharing friends' photos without permission, Posting cultural images online, Using copyrighted music in school projects Discuss your decisions with the class
Reflection & Next Steps
How can I ensure I share digital content responsibly? What protocols help keep my information safe online? How can I respect privacy and cultural considerations in my digital life? Extension: Research NZ digital laws or create a protocol security flowchart
