Multiplication and Division: The 2 Times Table
Year 3 Mathematics Learning to multiply and divide by 2 Duration: 15 minutes
WALT (We Are Learning To)
Multiply numbers by 2 Understand division as the inverse of multiplication Solve missing number equations Recognise patterns in the 2 times table
Success Criteria
I can count in 2s up to 20 I can solve multiplication facts for 2 I can work out division facts using multiplication I can find missing numbers in equations
Counting in 2s - Let's Start!
Count together: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 Use fingers to show pairs Clap on each number Notice the pattern - all even numbers!
Building the 2 Times Table
1 × 2 = 2 (1 group of 2) 2 × 2 = 4 (2 groups of 2) 3 × 2 = 6 (3 groups of 2) 4 × 2 = 8 (4 groups of 2) 5 × 2 = 10 (5 groups of 2)
Multiplication and Division Connection
{"left":"2 × 3 = 6\n6 ÷ 2 = 3\n4 × 2 = 8","right":"8 ÷ 2 = 4\n5 × 2 = 10\n10 ÷ 2 = 5"}
Missing Number Challenge
? × 2 = 8 3 × ? = 6 12 ÷ ? = 6 ? ÷ 2 = 4 Work in pairs to solve these! Use counters or draw pictures to help
Think and Discuss
If I have 14 stickers and want to share them equally between 2 friends, how many will each friend get? How can we use our 2 times table to solve this? What multiplication fact helps us?
Differentiation and Extension
Support: Use concrete objects and number lines Core: Complete times table charts Extension: Find patterns in larger multiples of 2 Dyslexia-friendly: Use colored overlays and audio support
Lesson Summary
We learned to multiply by 2 We discovered division is the opposite of multiplication We solved missing number problems We can use the 2 times table to solve real problems Well done, Year 3!
