Meet the Māori Gods
Discovering Ngā Atua Māori Year 2 Cultural Studies
What are Ngā Atua?
Atua means gods or spiritual beings They are very important in Māori culture Each atua has special powers They help explain how the world works
Ranginui - Sky Father
Ranginui is the Sky Father He covers the earth like a blanket The sky and clouds belong to him He separated from Papatūānuku long ago
Papatūānuku - Earth Mother
Papatūānuku is our Earth Mother All plants and land belong to her She gives us food and places to live We must take care of her
Tāne - God of Forests
Tāne is the god of forests and birds He created the first human All trees are his children He separated his parents, Ranginui and Papatūānuku
Tangaroa - God of the Ocean
Tangaroa rules all the oceans Fish and sea creatures are his children He provides kai moana (seafood) Fishermen ask for his blessing
Match the Atua Activity
Draw lines to match each atua to what they look after: Ranginui → Sky and clouds Papatūānuku → Earth and plants Tāne → Forests and birds Tangaroa → Ocean and fish
Think and Share
Which atua would you ask for help if: You wanted your garden to grow well? You were going fishing? You saw beautiful clouds in the sky? You were walking in the forest?
