Measuring Area with Square Units
Year 4 Mathematics Learning to measure area using square units
Warm-up: Square Count Game
Look at the shape on the screen Estimate how many squares you can see Count together to check our estimates What do you notice about counting squares?
What is Area?
Area is the amount of space inside a shape We measure area by counting square units Square units cover the entire surface Area is different from perimeter (which goes around the edge)
Square Centimetres (cm²)
We use square centimetres to measure area Written as cm² Each square is 1 centimetre × 1 centimetre The small ² means 'squared'
Counting vs Multiplying
{"left":"Counting Method: Count each square one by one\nMultiplication Method: Length × Width = Area","right":"Both methods give the same answer\nMultiplication is faster for rectangles"}
Hands-on Practice
Use square tiles to make shapes Count the squares to find area Record your findings: Length × Width = Area
Think About This
If a rectangle is 4 cm long and 3 cm wide, what is its area? How many different rectangles can you make with 12 square tiles? What happens to the area if we double the length?
What We Learned Today
Area measures the space inside a shape We count square units to find area Area is measured in square centimetres (cm²) We can count squares or multiply length × width Area is different from perimeter
