Mastering Narrative Structure: Year 9 Writing
Understanding the building blocks of storytelling Orientation • Complication • Climax • Resolution Year 9 English - New Zealand Curriculum
What Makes a Great Story?
Stories have been told for thousands of years From ancient myths to modern movies All great stories follow a similar pattern This pattern helps readers connect emotionally Understanding structure improves your writing
The Four Elements of Narrative Structure
Orientation: Setting the Scene
Introduces characters, setting, and time Establishes the 'normal world' of your story Helps readers understand the context Usually happens in the first paragraph Example: 'Sarah had always loved her quiet village until the day the strangers arrived'
Complication: The Problem Arises
Introduces conflict or challenge Disrupts the normal world established in orientation Creates tension and makes readers want to keep reading Can be external (villain, natural disaster) or internal (fear, doubt) Example: 'The strangers wore dark cloaks and seemed to be searching for something - or someone'
Climax: The Turning Point
The most intense or exciting moment Where the main character faces their biggest challenge Often involves a crucial decision or confrontation The point of highest tension in your story Example: 'Sarah realized she was the one they were looking for, and she had to choose: hide or stand up for her village'
Resolution: Tying It All Together
Shows how the conflict is resolved Reveals the outcome of the climax Explains what happens to the characters Provides closure for readers Example: 'The strangers revealed they were protectors, not threats, and Sarah discovered her own hidden powers'
