Getting Started: Opening Google Earth
Open Google Earth in your web browser Search for your beach location Use the zoom controls to get familiar Practice moving around the map
Step 1: Dropping Your First Pin
Right-click on your first research stop Select 'Add a placemark' A pin icon will appear The information box will open automatically
Step 2: Naming Your Site
Use your team's research site name Examples: 'Carpark', 'Shark Bell', 'Surf Club' Keep names simple and clear This helps identify your data later
Step 3: Recording Beach Width
In the description box, write your measured width Don't have measurements? Use Google Earth's ruler tool Click the ruler icon in the toolbar If using ruler tool, label as 'Secondary Data 2024 Google Earth'
Practice: Using the Ruler Tool
Find the ruler icon in the top toolbar Click to start measuring Click start point, then end point Read the distance in the popup Copy this measurement to your pin description
Step 4: GPS Coordinates & Adding Photos
Right-click your pin to see GPS coordinates Copy these numbers to your description Click 'Add Image' in the media section Upload your field trip photo from that location
