Lines: Horizontal and Vertical
Year 4 Mathematics Understanding Direction and Position

What Are Lines?
Lines are straight paths that go on forever They have no beginning and no end We see lines everywhere around us Today we'll learn about two special types of lines

Horizontal Lines
Horizontal lines go from left to right They are flat like the ground Think of a sleeping line lying down The horizon where sky meets land is horizontal

Find the Horizontal Lines
Look around the classroom Point to things that have horizontal lines Examples: whiteboard edges, desk tops, window sills Draw a horizontal line in the air with your finger
Vertical Lines
Vertical lines go from top to bottom They stand up straight and tall Think of a line standing at attention Like a flagpole or tree trunk

Horizontal vs Vertical
{"left":"Goes left to right\nGoes up and down\nFlat like sleeping\nTall like standing","right":"Like the horizon\nLike a flagpole\nGround level\nReaching to the sky"}

Quick Check!
Is a rainbow horizontal or vertical? What about a ladder? How about the edge of your desk? Think and discuss with a partner

Lines Are Everywhere!
We've learned about horizontal and vertical lines Horizontal lines go left to right (like sleeping) Vertical lines go up and down (like standing) Practice finding these lines in your world!
