Jumping Decimals: Converting Units Made Easy

Year 6 Mathematics Converting between metric units Making the decimal point jump!

What Are Metric Units?
Slide 2

What Are Metric Units?

Metric system uses base 10 Common units: metres, litres, grams Each unit has smaller and bigger versions Examples: millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres

The Golden Rule
Slide 3

The Golden Rule

Smaller unit to bigger unit = DIVIDE Bigger unit to smaller unit = MULTIPLY

Meet the Decimal Point
Slide 4

Meet the Decimal Point

The decimal point separates whole numbers from parts In 1.5, the point is between 1 and 5 We can make it 'jump' to change our number Jumping right makes numbers bigger Jumping left makes numbers smaller

Let's Convert: 1.5 kg to grams
Slide 5

Let's Convert: 1.5 kg to grams

Start with 1.5 kg Kilograms are bigger than grams Use the rule: bigger to smaller = MULTIPLY Multiply by 1,000 (jump decimal 3 places right) 1.5 becomes 1,500 grams!

The Decimal Jump in Action

The Decimal Jump in Action

Practice Time: 2,500 ml to litres
Slide 7

Practice Time: 2,500 ml to litres

Start with 2,500 ml Millilitres are smaller than litres Use the rule: smaller to bigger = DIVIDE Divide by 1,000 (jump decimal 3 places left) 2,500 becomes 2.5 litres!

Quick Reference Guide

{"left":"kg → g: multiply by 1,000 (jump 3 right)\ng → kg: divide by 1,000 (jump 3 left)\nL → ml: multiply by 1,000 (jump 3 right)","right":"ml → L: divide by 1,000 (jump 3 left)\nm → cm: multiply by 100 (jump 2 right)\ncm → m: divide by 100 (jump 2 left)"}

Test Your Skills!
Slide 9

Test Your Skills!

Convert 3.2 kg to grams Convert 4,750 ml to litres Convert 150 cm to metres Remember: Which direction does the decimal jump?

You're Now Decimal Jumping Experts!
Slide 10

You're Now Decimal Jumping Experts!

Remember the golden rule: smaller→bigger = divide, bigger→smaller = multiply Count the zeros to know how many places to jump Kilograms, litres, metres are the 'base' units Practice makes perfect! Use this skill in cooking, science, and everyday life!
