Fingerstyle Guitar: Plucking the Basics
Year 10 Music - Lesson 11 Building Independence and Control From Strumming to Individual String Mastery
What is Fingerstyle Guitar?
Individual string plucking instead of strumming Uses thumb and fingers independently Creates melody and bass lines simultaneously Foundation for classical, folk, and contemporary styles
Hand Position Warm-Up
Place thumb on 6th string (low E) Index finger on 3rd string (G) Middle finger on 2nd string (B) Ring finger on 1st string (high E) Practice slow alternating plucks
The PIMA System
P (Pulgar) = Thumb - plays bass strings (4th, 5th, 6th) I (Indice) = Index finger - plays 3rd string M (Medio) = Middle finger - plays 2nd string A (Anular) = Ring finger - plays 1st string Standard notation system used worldwide
Basic Pattern Practice
Pattern 1: P-I-M-A (thumb, index, middle, ring) Start very slowly with metronome Focus on clean, clear notes Maintain steady rhythm No rushing - accuracy first!
Peer Feedback Activity
{"left":"Partner A performs chosen pattern\nPartner B observes and listens\nFocus on rhythm consistency\nNote finger positioning","right":"Check for string buzzing\nProvide one positive comment\nSuggest one improvement\nSwitch roles and repeat"}
Adding Chords to Fingerstyle
Combine patterns with familiar chord shapes Try G major chord with P-I-M-A pattern Left hand holds chord, right hand plucks pattern Creates rich, full sound Foundation for fingerstyle songs
Reflection and Goal Setting
What felt most challenging about fingerstyle today? Which finger needed the most attention? How did the coordination feel between hands? What will you practice before next lesson? Set one specific, achievable goal
