The Māori King has many important roles He serves all Māori people across Aotearoa His mahi (work) helps keep Māori culture strong Today we'll explore five key responsibilities
Kaitiaki o te iwi - Guardian of the People
Kaitiaki = guardian, protector The King looks after Māori people's wellbeing He protects Māori rights and interests Like a caring whānau leader for all iwi
Kaiwhakawā - Mediator and Peacemaker
Kaiwhakawā = someone who helps solve problems When iwi disagree, the King helps find solutions He brings people together to talk Uses tikanga Māori to find fair answers
Tohunga ā-iwi - Spiritual and Cultural Leader
Tohunga = expert, wise leader The King helps keep Māori traditions alive He leads important ceremonies and hui Shares mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge)
Whakakotahi i ngā iwi - Uniter of Tribes
Whakakotahi = to bring together, unite Many different iwi across Aotearoa The King helps them work together Stronger when iwi support each other
Whakangungu matatika - Promoter of Law and Order
Matatika = doing what is right and fair The King promotes good behaviour He supports tikanga Māori (Māori customs) Helps people follow the right path
