Communication in Friendships
Learning to communicate clearly and respectfully Building stronger relationships through better communication Year 8 Health and Personal Development

What Would You Do?
Scenario 1: Your friend ignores you at lunch Scenario 2: Someone constantly interrupts you when you're speaking Think about: How would you feel? What would you say?

How Do These Situations Make You Feel?
Being ignored can make us feel hurt, confused, or angry Being interrupted can make us feel frustrated or unimportant Our feelings are valid, but how we respond matters Let's explore different ways people communicate

Types of Communication Styles

Which Communication Style Builds Better Friendships?
Look at the four communication styles Discuss with your partner: Which style would you want your friends to use with you? Which style helps solve problems without hurting feelings? Vote: Which style is best for healthy friendships?

Using 'I' Statements
Structure: I feel... when... because... I would like... Example: 'I feel annoyed when I get interrupted because I can't finish my ideas. I would like a chance to speak.' Focuses on your feelings, not attacking the other person Helps others understand your perspective

Practice: Turn These Into 'I' Statements
'You never listen to me!' becomes... 'You're so annoying!' becomes... 'You always cancel our plans!' becomes... Work with a partner to create better versions using 'I feel... when... because... I would like...'

Role Play Challenge
Groups of 3-4 students Each group gets a friendship scenario: • Friend cancels plans last minute • Someone shares your secret • Being left out of group activities Act out the BAD way first (aggressive/passive) Then act out the GOOD way (assertive with I-statements)
