Year 5 Mathematics Column Method with Regrouping 30 minutes
WALT - We Are Learning To
Add two numbers using renaming/regrouping Understand when digits in a column exceed 9 Use the column method correctly for large numbers
Success Criteria - I Can...
Line up numbers correctly using place value Add each column from right to left Rename/regroup when the total is more than 9 Record the renamed number correctly in the next column
Recap: What is Renaming?
When we add digits and get 10 or more We 'rename' or 'regroup' the number Write down the ones digit Carry the tens digit to the next column
Let's Try: 4328 + 2354
Set up the problem in columns Start with the ones place: 8 + 4 = 12 Write 2, carry 1 to tens place Tens place: 2 + 5 + 1 = 8 Continue with hundreds and thousands
Larger Numbers: 54,000 + 138,000
{"left":"Line up place values carefully\nStart from the rightmost column\nThousands: 4 + 8 = 12 (rename!)","right":"Ten-thousands: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9\nHundred-thousands: 0 + 1 = 1\nAnswer: 192,000"}
Your Turn to Practice!
Try these problems independently: 2847 + 1695 = 36,428 + 25,847 = Remember to line up place values Check your renaming carefully
