NCEA Level 3 — Achievement Standards & Resources

NCEA Level 3 is the top secondary NCEA qualification, typically sat in Year 13. It's pitched at a deeper conceptual level than Level 2 — Level 3 standards demand stronger written analysis, independent investigation and abstract reasoning. Level 3 also doubles as the gateway to University Entrance, the formal threshold for enrolling in a New Zealand university.

To earn NCEA Level 3, students accumulate credits at Level 3 (with some Level 2 credits permitted under NZQA's rules). For University Entrance, students additionally need a set number of credits across approved subjects at Level 3, plus the literacy and numeracy requirements set by NZQA. Exact credit thresholds and the approved subjects list are maintained by NZQA and revised periodically — check the current NZQA spec.

For the full 2026 exam window and per-subject schedule, see our NCEA exam timetable. For context on how Level 3 fits with Levels 1 and 2, see the NCEA hub.
