How to teach math at home — a 5-step framework

The order matters. Most homeschool parents who feel lost in math by week six skipped step one. Slow down and run through these in sequence before you commit to a full year of materials.

  1. 1. Place your child accurately before you buy anything

    The single biggest mistake homeschool parents make in math is pitching the curriculum a year too high. Every major publisher offers a free placement test, often a short PDF you can print and run in 30 minutes. Use it. Start your child a half-level below where you think they are. Confidence and momentum matter more in math than starting at exactly the right page — and an under-pitched start can be corrected in two weeks by skipping ahead, while an over-pitched start can wreck a year.

  2. 2. Pick one program and finish a chapter before judging it

    Math programs feel uncomfortable in week one because they have a method.
