Food Web and Energy Flow (detailed)

About this illustration

A detailed, fully labelled food web and energy flow diagram showing five trophic levels in a terrestrial ecosystem. The Sun (energy source) drives photosynthesis into producers (Grass, Shrubs, Wildflowers) at Level 1. Primary consumers (Rabbit, Mouse, Grasshopper, Caterpillar) at Level 2 feed on producers. Secondary consumers (Fox, Snake, Small Birds) at Level 3 feed on primary consumers. A Hawk or Eagle at Level 4 (Tertiary Consumer) feeds on secondary consumers. Decomposers (Fungi, Earthworms) break down organic matter and recycle nutrients back to producers. Arrows indicate direction of energy flow; dashed arrows show nutrient recycling from decomposers to producers.
