Erosion Explorers: How Earth Changes

Grade 3 Science Discovering how natural forces shape our world

What Do You Think?
Slide 2

What Do You Think?

Have you ever seen rocks or soil that looked like they were moved by nature? What forces in nature are strong enough to move rocks and dirt?

What is Erosion?
Slide 3

What is Erosion?

Erosion is when wind, water, or ice move pieces of soil and rock from one place to another It happens everywhere around us! Erosion can be fast or very slow It changes the shape of our land

Slide 4

Three Forces That Cause Erosion

{"left":"Wind picks up and carries small particles like sand and dust\nWater washes soil downhill and wears away riverbanks","right":"Ice in glaciers scrapes rocks and carries them as it slowly moves"}

Erosion Experiment Time!
Slide 6

Erosion Experiment Time!

We'll use sand and water to see erosion in action Watch what happens when 'rain' falls on our mini landscape Look for channels and movement of sand Think about how this is like real erosion in nature

What Did We Discover?
Slide 7

What Did We Discover?

Sand moved when water flowed over it Channels formed where water traveled Some sand was carried away to new places This is just like erosion in nature!

Remember This!
Slide 8

Remember This!

Erosion is constantly changing the shape of our Earth Wind, water, and ice are nature's sculptors We can see erosion happening all around us in British Columbia
