Year 5 Maths: Exploring Numbers and Patterns
WALT: We Are Learning To identify, describe and extend number patterns Success Criteria: I can find patterns in numbers and explain the rule Duration: 60 minutes
What Are Number Patterns?
A pattern is something that repeats in a predictable way Number patterns follow a rule We can predict what comes next Examples: 2, 4, 6, 8... (adding 2 each time)
Pattern Detective Challenge
Look at these number sequences 5, 10, 15, 20, ? 1, 4, 7, 10, ? 100, 90, 80, 70, ? What comes next?
Types of Number Patterns
Counting patterns (2, 4, 6, 8...) Growing patterns (1, 3, 6, 10...) Decreasing patterns (20, 18, 16, 14...) Multiplication patterns (3, 6, 12, 24...)
Quick Check: What's the Rule?
Pattern: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 What is the rule? What would be the next three numbers?
Finding Pattern Rules
{"left":"Look at the differences between numbers\nIs it adding the same amount each time?\nIs it multiplying by the same number?","right":"Is it a combination of operations?\nWrite the rule in words\nTest your rule with the next number"}
Create Your Own Pattern
Start with any number you like Choose a rule (add, subtract, multiply) Write the first 6 numbers in your pattern Challenge a partner to find your rule!
Real-World Number Patterns
Bus timetables (every 15 minutes) Money counting (5c, 10c, 15c, 20c) Sports scores and points Calendar dates and weeks
Pattern Investigation Board
Pattern Race Game
Teams of 4 students Each team gets a pattern starter Race to extend the pattern correctly First team with 10 numbers wins!
Tricky Pattern Challenge
Advanced Pattern: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ? This is the famous Fibonacci sequence! Can you work out the rule? Extension: Where do we see this in nature?
Differentiation Strategies
Support: Use number lines and counters Core: Work with patterns up to 100 Extension: Create complex multi-step patterns Visual learners: Use pattern blocks and colors
