What is Plot?

The sequence of events in a story The 'what happens' that drives the narrative forward More than just a summary - it's the structure Creates tension, conflict, and resolution

The Classic Plot Diagram

Exposition: Setting the Stage

Introduces characters, setting, and background Establishes the story world Provides necessary context Often includes the inciting incident

Identify the Exposition

Read the opening paragraph of a short story Work in pairs to identify: • Characters introduced • Setting established • Background information given Share findings with the class

Rising Action: Building Tension

Series of events that build toward the climax Develops conflict and complications Character development occurs here Creates suspense and engagement
