What is a Cartesian Plane?
Named after mathematician René Descartes Two perpendicular number lines Horizontal line = x-axis Vertical line = y-axis Origin is where they meet (0, 0)
Understanding Ordered Pairs
Written as (x, y) x-coordinate comes first (horizontal) y-coordinate comes second (vertical) Always use parentheses and comma Example: (3, 2) means 3 right, 2 up
Let's Plot Together!
Plot these points on your grid: (2, 3) (-1, 4) (3, -2) (-2, -1)

Positive vs Negative Coordinates
{"left":"Positive x: Move RIGHT from origin\nPositive y: Move UP from origin","right":"Negative x: Move LEFT from origin\nNegative y: Move DOWN from origin"}

Quick Check!
Look at point A at coordinates (4, -3) Which quadrant is point A in? How did you know?

Differentiation Activity
Beginner: Plot points in Quadrant I only Intermediate: Plot points in all quadrants Advanced: Create shapes using coordinate points Extension: Design coordinate treasure maps

Real-World Applications
Maps and GPS navigation Video game character movement Architectural blueprints Treasure hunt coordinates Computer graphics and animation
Extension Challenge
Create a coordinate city map Plot important locations: School at (0, 0) Park at (3, 2) Library at (-2, 4) Design your own locations!
