Open the Door: Embedded Clause Stories
Year 6 English 150-Word Creative Writing Using Embedded Clauses
WALT: We Are Learning To...
Write a 150-word creative text that uses embedded clauses Add detail and control the reader's attention Use who, which, that, where, when to create complex sentences Edit for strong verbs and precise vocabulary
Success Criteria - What We'll Achieve
Write exactly 150 words (drafting range 145-155) Include at least 2 embedded clauses using who/which/that/where/when Add useful detail about character, setting, or change Use commas correctly around embedded clauses Edit for strong verbs without exceeding word limit
Hook Activity: Complete the Story Starter
Write the sentence starter on your page: 'I didn't mean to open the door, but...' Continue for 2-3 sentences without stopping Don't worry about perfection - just get ideas flowing!
What Are Embedded Clauses?
Clauses inside sentences that add extra information Start with: who, which, that, where, when Test: Remove the clause - does the sentence still make sense? Example: 'The boy who lived next door vanished.' They're efficient tools for adding depth in short writing
Sentence Gym - Practice Time!
Choose 2 base sentences and add embedded clauses: • The sound came from the cupboard • I saw a sign on the wall • The neighbour stared at me • We stepped into the room Use: who, which, that, where, when
Plan Your 150-Word Story
{"left":"Beginning (40-50 words): Who/where + normal moment\nMiddle (60-70 words): The shift/problem - what's behind the door?\nEnd (30-40 words): Consequence/reveal + final line","right":"Remember: Include 2+ embedded clauses\nUse strong verbs and sensory details\nEvery word counts towards your 150!"}
Write, Edit & Self-Check
Independent writing: 15 minutes for your full narrative Tight edit: Replace weak verbs, add sensory details Check commas around embedded clauses Count words (aim 145-155 for drafting) Highlight your embedded clauses Circle clause starters (who/which/that/where/when)
