The Four Instrument Families
Strings - vibrating strings create sound Woodwinds - air blown through or across openings Brass - air vibrated through metal tubes Percussion - struck, shaken, or scraped surfaces

String Family
Sound created by vibrating strings Strings can be plucked, bowed, or struck Pitch changes with string length and tension Examples: violin, guitar, piano, harp
String Family Detective
Look at these instruments Which ones belong to the string family? Violin, Trumpet, Guitar, Flute, Cello, Drums

Woodwind Family
Air blown through or across the instrument Sound created by vibrating air column Not all woodwinds are made of wood! Examples: flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder

Woodwind Sound Production
{"left":"Reed Instruments\nClarinet uses single reed\nSaxophone uses single reed\nOboe uses double reed","right":"Air Instruments\nFlute - air blown across hole\nRecorder - air blown into mouthpiece\nPiccolo - air blown across hole"}
Brass Family
Air vibrated through metal tubes Player's lips buzz into a mouthpiece Valves or slides change pitch Examples: trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba
Percussion Family
Largest and most diverse family Sound from striking, shaking, or scraping Can be tuned or untuned Examples: drums, cymbals, xylophone, triangle

Family Sorting Challenge
Sort these instruments into their families: Piano, Flute, Drums, Violin, Trumpet, Clarinet, Cymbals, Guitar
