The Five Essential Plot Elements
Exposition - Setting the scene Rising Action - Building tension Climax - The turning point Falling Action - Consequences unfold Resolution - Tying up loose ends
Exposition: Setting the Foundation
Introduces characters, setting, and background Establishes the story world and context Provides essential information for understanding Often includes hints about upcoming conflict
Exposition Detective
Read the opening paragraph of your assigned text Identify: Who? Where? When? List three pieces of background information Predict what conflict might arise
Rising Action: Building the Tension
Series of events that develop the conflict Characters face obstacles and challenges Tension and suspense increase steadily Each event leads logically to the next
Internal vs External Conflict

Climax: The Moment of Truth
The story's turning point or peak moment Highest point of tension and drama The main conflict reaches its crisis Often involves a crucial decision or revelation
The Power of the Climax
'The climax is the moment when the protagonist must face their greatest fear or make their most difficult choice. Everything in the story has been building to this point.'
Falling Action: Dealing with Consequences
Events that happen after the climax Shows the immediate results of the climax Begins to resolve secondary conflicts Characters deal with changes and revelations
Resolution: Bringing Closure
Also called the denouement Ties up remaining loose ends Shows the new normal after the conflict May hint at future possibilities
