Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Connected
Year 5 Mathematics Understanding the connections between different number representations 45-minute learning journey
Learning Intentions - Lesson 1
We are learning that fractions, decimals and percentages can represent the same value Success Criteria: I can identify equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages I can match representations that show the same value
Think-Pair-Share
Where have you seen fractions, decimals, and percentages in everyday life? Think for 30 seconds, then share with a partner Be ready to share one example with the class
The Same Value, Different Ways
Hundred Grid Exploration
Use your hundred grid to show 25/100 Color in the squares What decimal does this represent? What percentage? Record your findings
What We Discovered
25/100 = 0.25 = 25% The hundred grid helps us see the connection All three show the same amount Different ways, same value!
Matching Challenge
{"left":"1/2\n0.5\n50%\n3/4\n0.75","right":"75%\n1/4\n0.25\n25%"}
Learning Intentions - Lesson 2
We are learning to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages Success Criteria: I can convert between fractions, decimals and percentages I can explain the strategy I used
Converting Fractions to Decimals
Divide the numerator by the denominator 1/2 = 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 1/4 = 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25
Practice Converting
Convert these fractions to decimals: 1/5 = ? 2/5 = ? 4/5 = ? Show your working and explain your method
Converting Decimals to Percentages
Multiply the decimal by 100 0.5 × 100 = 50% 0.25 × 100 = 25% 0.75 × 100 = 75% Move the decimal point two places right!
Quick Convert Challenge
Convert these decimals to percentages: 0.3 = ? 0.8 = ? 0.15 = ? Time limit: 2 minutes!
