Estimating Subtraction Strategy
Step 1: Round both numbers to friendly values 482 - 179 becomes 500 - 200 Step 2: Do the easy mental math: 500 - 200 = 300 Step 3: Check with calculator: 482 - 179 = 303 Our estimate of 300 is very close! ✓
Estimating Division: Smart Grouping
Example: Estimate 495 ÷ 9 Round 495 to 500 (nearest 100) Round 9 to 10 (nearest 10) Calculate: 500 ÷ 10 = 50 Check: 495 ÷ 9 = 55 (very close!)
