Analyzing Print Media Representations
Year 8 English Understanding how writers create meaning Developing analytical writing skills
WALT: We Are Learning To
Identify different representations in print media texts Analyze how writers use language features to create meaning Understand how text structure supports representations Write analytical responses using evidence and explanation
Success Criteria
I can identify at least two different representations about print media I can find evidence (opinion, language features, text structure) for each representation I can explain the effect of writer's techniques I can structure my analysis using representation → evidence → technique → effect

What is Print Media?
Think about newspapers, magazines, and printed articles How is print media different from digital media? What makes print media special or unique?
Understanding the Task
We need to analyze HOW writers create meaning Not just identify techniques - explain their effects Focus on representations (ideas about print media) Use evidence to support our analysis
What Are Representations?
Representations are IDEAS or CONCEPTS about a topic In our case: ideas about print media Examples: 'Print media is still relevant', 'Print media is outdated' NOT the same as techniques (metaphor, alliteration, etc.)

The Analysis Framework
Our Focus Text Context
Article title: 'Newfound appreciation for print media' Published in an online newspaper (opinion piece) Writer's stance: print media deserves renewed value Compares print media with digital media throughout
Spotting Representations Activity
Read the sample text extract Work in pairs to identify possible representations Look for repeated ideas about print media Remember: representations are concepts, not techniques
Representation 1: Print Media is Still Relevant
Evidence cluster: mentions of lasting value Writer's opinion: print media has enduring importance Look for specific quotes that support this idea Consider why the writer emphasizes relevance
Finding Language Features for Representation 1
Look for persuasive language techniques Emotive words that create positive feelings Comparative language (print vs digital) Descriptive language that appeals to senses
Text Structure for Representation 1
Where does this representation appear in the article? Is it in the introduction, body, or conclusion? How does placement affect impact? Does the writer return to this idea multiple times?
